Torah Study

(Beit Midrash - House of Study)

Our Beit Midrash

I am sure we can all benefit from studies together as we work our way progressively through the whole Torah and then turn again and start over as Jewish Students have done in Yeshivot down through the centuries.

Why We Study Torah First

Let's consider briefly why we are starting our study in the Torah and not the Brit Hadashah.

Many Christians start their studies from the Pauline epistles and work backward to find justification from the Torah. Whereas we as Talmidei Yeshua start with the Torah and move forward into the Brit Hadashah.

Even Yeshua himself set this pattern of study when he talked with the two talmidim on the road to Ammaus, after He had been raised from the dead. We find this in Luke 24:44-49.

So, as Yeshua Himself told His followers to read all that was said about Him in the Torah, what better place is there for us to start our Scriptural studies than in the Torah?

Study of the Scriptures requires considerable self-discipline to ensure that the richness of the message is fully observed. When we read the Scriptures in depth we find a whole new understanding opens up. That is why in the Jewish Synagogues the Torah is read and studied year-in-year-out. Over-and-over-again. Because by going back and back and back one becomes totally absorbed by the very essence of the Word and only after years of careful observation do we really start too see - the mind and heart of Adonai.

Let me share with you a Jewish Midrash. It is about - "Professor Aze'ez and the student."

(you may have heard this one before, if so please bear with my version).

One day Professor Aze'ez was teaching a biology class and a very bright student said - "I want to become the most knowledgable student in biology, so please Professor tell me all I need to know. In response Professor Aze'ez dumped a fish on the desk and said go and observe the fish and write down all you see. The student went away and about half an hour later came back with some notes and said here is what I saw. The professor looked at the notes and said, it's a start go and observe some more. The student went away and observed the fish again. The hours passed, at the end of the day he returned to the professor with many pages of written notes. The professor smiled and said you are just beginning, go and study some more. Days and weeks went by and the student finally returned with a book about the fish and said - "now I am beginning to understand."

Friends if we are going to begin to understand Scripture we must be constantly searching and observing over and over like that student. We must truly become Talmidei Yeshua.
